Château d'Angers (Angers, France)

From the outside, a limestone fortress with 17 black and white towers, this castle was originally started by St Louis in 1230. The construction lasted ten years. Dominating the Maine river, it held a strategic position. Inside, the style of the buildings couldn’t be more different, as they date from the end of the Gothic era. There visitors can see the residence of the Dukes of Anjou, a 1410 chapel, and a 14th Century Tapestry of the Apocalypse, at 104 metres long the longest known medieval tapestry, housed in a modern building. From the 5th of September to the 30th of April, the castle is open from 10 am to 5.30 pm, the rest of the year from 9.30 am to 6.30 pm.
