Carnac stones (Carnac, France)

Carnac, on the coast of Morbihan in Brittany, is mostly known for its megalithic alignments dating from 4500 to 2000 BC. There are about 3000 such megaliths (or menhirs as they are also known) on Carnac’s territory, split between three main sites, Le Ménec, Kermario and Kerlascan. This example of Europe’s first ever architecture is under threat, as for years visitors have compacted the soil, causing some of the stones to move or fall, which is why travellers can no longer wander freely among the alignments. There are also a couple of tumulii (artificial mounds covering burial deposits), one as old as 4670 BC and a group of 3 dolmens (stone tables).
