Tongariro National Park (Whakapapa, New Zealand)

Tongariro National Park in New Zealand is the country’s oldest National Park, established in 1887 it is the fourth oldest National Park in the world. Located in the middle of North Island the park covers an area of 795.98 km², it is recognised by UNESCO as a natural World Heritage Site. The park supports a vast range of fauna and flora including 56 different endangered species of bird, the North Island Brown Kiwi, Blue Duck, Double Banded Plover and the Karearea are all endemic to the region. Tongariro National Park contains three of New Zealand’s most active volcanoes: Ruapehu, Tongariro - from which the park takes its name, and Ngauruhoe. The summits of these three mountains are sacred Maori sites (known as tapu) and several other important Maori sites can be found within the area. The park is accessible at several different points and there are no entry charges. Popular activities include hiking, climbing and skiing.
