The Market Theatre was established at the site of the old Indian Market in 1976 and gained a reputation for its anti-Apartheid performances. Privately owned and operated, it defied the Group Areas Act and boldly hosted many works by international playwrights. Government funding was only obtained under the new regime in the 1990s. The Market has played a vital role in developing local theatre and holds multiple awards, both local and international. The main auditorium seats 387 and both the adjoining Barney Simon and Laager venues have a capacity of 120 each. Facilities include the Gramadoelas Restaurant.
