The Ghan (Adelaide, Australia)

The Ghan is one of Australia’s long distance railways, running from Adelaide in South Australia to Darwin in the Northern Territory. It covers 2979 km (about 1850 miles) and the journey takes three days and two nights. The route is operated by Great Southern Rail and there are twice weekly departures. Passengers can choose between three levels of on-board service: platinum, gold and red. The name Ghan derives from the employment of Afghans as camel drivers, which was the only mode of transport before the railways. The railway was begun in 1878 and by 1929 it had reached Alice Springs. The service continued until 1980 when a new section of line running from Tarcoola to Alice Springs was completed to the west of the original line which was prone to flash flooding. The extension to Darwin was begun in 2001 and completed in 2004.
