Route 44 (Strand, South Africa)

The Route 44 is a scenic drive that leads from Strand to Kleinmod, around an hours drive away from Cape Town. The original road in this area was built by Italian prisoners of war during the 1950’s and later, during the 1990 rebuilt and named Route 44. During it’s whole length it is sandwiched in between the ocean and the mountains and you will pass from several sandy beaches and, with a bit of luck, be able to spot some whales. Parking bays to stop can be found all along the route, there are cliffpath-walks, hiking trails and other activities to engage during your trip which include paragliding, shark cage diving, sand boarding, deep sea diving and much more. At Stoney Point you can visit a penguin colony that has settled down here during the 1980’s and since grown steadily while the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve was recognised as a world’s greatest biodiversity hot-spot and features more than 1800 plant species.
