Rock Garden (Chandigarh, India)

The Rock Garden in Chandigarh was created by Nek Chand, an illiterate transport worker who took a small patch of wasteland and set about building something unique and creative. He initially worked in secret and his illegal work of art grew until the local government were faced with a dilemna. To demolish the site or to recognise its value. Luckily they took the latter course and gave Nek Chand a job to further develop the gardens as well as a work force to help him. Today the gardens cover 25 acres and contain waterfalls, swings, an auditorium and thousands of sculptures. Admission costs just 5 rupees (approximately 10 cents). The garden is open from 9am to 7pm in Summer and until 6 pm in Winter. Due to the large number of steps and uneven surfaces, the Rock Garden is not suitable for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility. A large car park is available next to the Rock Garden
