Pont du Gard (Vers Pont du Gard, France)
The Pont du Gard was part of a Roman aqueduct carrying water to the town of Na®mes and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Roman water engineering was highly skilled with precise gradients and flows calculated so that the crossing of the river Gardon was necessary at this point. Construction is of huge dressed limestone blocks, using no mortar but held together by iron clamps. But the structure is not just functional, and the architect took pains to present an aesthetic whole. The lowest span of six arches is surmounted by a row of 11 smaller arches which in turn are capped by 35 arches; each of the upper rows is slightly recessed to give a lighter appearance. The stones are now weathered to a honey colour so that the 50 metre high structure seems integrated into the landscape. Restoration work was carried out in the 19th century and at the same time a road bridge was built beside the span. This single carriageway is still in use, but not in the summer months. Visitors can drive up to the Pont along each river bank, and there are car parks, refreshments and bathing areas.
