Accommodations in Nîmes near Square House (Nîmes, France)

Square House (Nîmes, France)

The Maison Carree is one of the best preserved temples, remaining from the Roman Empire. Built under Agrippa, it has been dedicated to his sons Gaius Julius Caesar Vipsanius and Lucius Caesar, who both had been adopted as heirs to Emperor Augustus, but died young. The temple stands on a nearly 3 m high podium, from where it used to overlook the (now destroyed) Roman forum of the town. It is 17m high and measures 26m in length and 15m in width. Inside the windowless hall of the temple visitors are able to take part in a multimedia show which will transport them back in time. On a panoramic screen, and with the help of specially designed glasses, they will be able to view a 20-minute feature programme about the heroes of the town. The viewer will feel like being right in the middle of the gladiator fights, take part in a Roman ceremony and explore the Pont du Gard. Opening times : November - February 10 am - 1 pm and 2 pm - 5 pm March and October 9 a m - 5.30 pm April, May and September 9 am - 6 pm June - August 9 am - 7 pm
