Nan Hua Buddhist Temple (Bronkhorstspruit, South Africa)

The Nan Hua Buddhist Temple can be found in the suburb of Bronkhorstspruit, approximately 50 kilometres east of South Africa’s capital Pretoria. It is the largest Buddhist Temple on the African continent and is home to the African headquarters of the Fo Guang Shan (Buddha’s Light Mountain) Order, which is the largest Buddhist sect in Taiwan. The origins of this temple in South Africa date back only to 1992 when six acres of land were set aside for the temples’ construction. Since this date several other smaller satellite temples have been built in Africa. In 2002 a bomb was planted in the besiegement of this temple, which exploded and injured two members of staff. A right wing Afrikaner organisation called the Boeremag claimed responsibility for this act.
