Ljubljana Castle (Ljubljana, Slovenia)
Ljubljana Castle is the city’s dominant landmark. Although there have been fortifications on the hill top for centuries, the buildings that stand today date from the sixteenth and seventeenth century. There is no charge to wander in the courtyard but a fee is charged to enter the buildings, for the interactive exhibition that tells the history of Ljubljana from early times and for entry to the observation tower. There are discounts for holders of the Ljubljana Card An open air cafe is open in the courtyard in summer when there is also a land train to take visitors up the hill from the Old Town. In 2007 a glass funicular opened to provide an alternative means of reaching the castle. Wheelchair users can gain entry to the courtyard but not the interior of the castle. Guided tours are available at 10 am and 4 pm every day between 1st June and 15th September and by prior arrangement at other times of year. Opening hours are from 10 am to 9 pm in the winter and from 9 am to 10 pm in summer.
