Leaning Tower of Pisa (Pisa, Italy)

This is one of the well-known landmarks of Italy, and indeed Europe. Built as the bell tower (campanile) of the cathedral, it forms a group with the cathedral, baptistery and camposanto in the Piazza dei Miracoli. It was begun in 1173 and took 200 years to complete. All the buildings in the group were begun in the Pisan Romanesque style and completed in gothic. Galileo famously demonstrated laws of motion by dropping objects from the top of the tower. Subsidence began almost as soon as it was completed and has continued, despite efforts to halt it, up to the present day. Recent work has successfully stabilised it and it is once again open to the public. Visitors can climb the 293 steps to the top, but only in groups of 30. Children under 8 years are not allowed and under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. There is an entrance fee.
