Dom van Utrecht (Utrecht, Netherlands)

The Domkerk of Utrecht as seen today is all that remains of a previously much larger cathedral which was partially destroyed by a tornado in the 17th century. Today’s cathedral contains just the choir and transept of the old cathedral and the Domtoren (or cathedral tower) now stands separate from the rest of the building. There has been a church, chapel or cathedral in Utrecht dedicated to St Martin since around 600 but successive buildings have fallen foul of hostile attacks, fire and the tornado leading to repeated rebuilding. The Cathedral is open every day but visiting hours vary by day and time of year so visitors are advised to check the website beforehand. Admission is free.
