Nicolaï Church (Utrecht, Netherlands)
The Nicolai Church with its two towers was built at the beginning of the 12th century and owes its name to the junction of waterways near its location. During the years the church has had some minor changes which are still visible inside, but in the 15th century the church had an important change, the Roman cross basilica changed into a Gothic hall church and in 1579 it became a protestant church which it still is today. Besides a rich history it’s also famous due to the three church organs, the largest church organ with the name “Marcussen” (1888) has33 pipes and the others, named “Sweelinck” (1953) and “The Koororgel” (1979) have 16 and 5 pipes respectively. With its large bell which dates from 1573 in the Northern tower and 4 smaller bells (1997) in the Southern tower, this church attracts people from all over the country and the world. The church can be visited the whole year on Sunday from 12:00pm till 4:00pm. From July till September (tourist season) the church is open from Tuesday till Saturday from 12:00pm till 5:00pm. In April, June and September to December it’s also open on Wednesday and Saturday from 1:00pm till 4:00pm. At the website, which is only available in Dutch, you are able to find a calendar (Agenda) which lists the activities you can visit throughout the year.
