Accommodations in Caesarea near Caesarea National Park (Caesarea, Israel)

Caesarea National Park (Caesarea, Israel)

The focus of this national park is the “showcase port city” of Caesarea. The settlement dates from the 3rd century BC, but the name of Caesarea and its flowering into a sophisticated city was under King Herod the Great, beginning in 22BC. The city’s wealth was built round the port, and temples, public buildings, bath houses and an arena were built. It survived up until the time of the Crusades but was then buried under sand. The site has now been excavated and developed into a national park under the aegis of the Israel Nature and Parks Authority. A high point is the Roman theatre which is used for live shows, and a unique feature is the diving centre which offers dives to underwater remains. Also in the park are a museum, archaeological garden and hippodrome promenade. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm April to September and to 4pm for the rest of the year. On Fridays the Park closes an hour earlier. It is suggested visitors allow one to three hours. Refreshments are available and wheelchair access is possible to certain areas.
