This Belfry was erected on the former site of a castle in 1661-1671, after the collapsing of the bell tower in 1661. It is the only Baroque-style belfry in Belgium and is still known as “el catiau” (the castle) by the locals. It is 87 m high and has a carillon with 49 bells. It has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 together with other Flemish belfries.
