Alipore Zoo (Kolkata, India)

Alipore Zoo in Kolkata is the oldest official zoological garden in India. It opened to the public on the 1st January 1876 and occupies a 45 acre site in the Alipore district of the city. It is also known as Calcutta Zoo or Kolkata Zoo. The zoo provides a home for many endangered species of animals and also has its own breeding programme. One of its most famous residents was an Aldabra Giant Tortoise that was believed to have been over 250 years old when it died. Alipore Zoo is one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions, attracting over 2 million visitors in 2005 and at its peak over 25,000 visitors per day. Alipore Zoo is open daily between 9am and 5pm. There is an admission fee of 5 rupees per person. The zoo is well served by public transport and the nearest Metro station is Maidan.
