North Conway, New Hampshire: Adventure in the White Mountains

A lively village nestled in the scenic Mount Washington Valley, North Conway offers outdoor adventure to suit every traveller and season, from world-class skiing and mountain climbing to canoeing, hiking, and camping. And if shopping is your preferred athletic pursuit, look no further: North Conway is also famous for its extensive collection of factory outlets, as well as fine art galleries and one-of-a-kind shops.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow…

Named, some say, for their glittering, snow-capped peaks, the White Mountains are a very popular ski vacation destination in New Hampshire. North Conway is a convenient base for several premier resorts, including Wildcat Mountain and Attitash. Wildcat is famously rugged and beautiful, offering 2,100 vertical feet of skiing and snowboarding terrain as well as a lift that whisks skiers to the summit in under seven minutes. Not to be outdone, Attitash uses one of the best snow making systems in New England to keep its two distinct mountains well supplied with the white stuff, and features the only ski-in, ski-out hotel in the Mount Washington valley. However, things do not go entirely downhill from here: travellers also enjoy the winter season on cross country skis, snowshoes, tubes, horse-drawn sleighs, and ice skates. Adventurous skiers who are craving something a little different come here to try snow kiting; North Conway’s fierce winter winds and wide open spaces form the ideal training ground for this gravity-defying sport.

Climb every mountain…

North Conway is home to the International Mountain Climbing School, and for good reason: The Mount Washington Valley offers several world-class climbing locales, including Cathedral Ledge, Cannon Cliff, Whitehorse Ledge, and the Frankenstein Cliffs. The school teaches climbers at all levels and in all seasons: intrepid climbers can even challenge themselves here on frozen waterfalls! However, there are also many trails for travellers who want to explore this scenic area without a harness. The relatively flat, short path to Diana’s Baths, a lovely cascading waterfall, is a good choice for young families and explorers who are breaking in new boots. And there are also two ways to get to the top of Mount Washington without breaking a sweat: You can take the Auto Road, or head to Bretton Woods (29 miles away) to catch a ride up on the world’s first cog railway. On a clear day, you can see the Atlantic Ocean from the summit; on others, you may literally have your head in the clouds!

Hot fun in the summertime…

Though Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Northeastern United States, is famous for having the “world’s worst weather,” conditions are certainly more pleasant in summer and fall. Travellers can canoe, kayak, or take a tube down the Saco River in the warmer months, and will find no shortage of places to camp out or park an RV. You can also explore the mountains on horseback or two fat wheels: the area offers lift-accessed downhill terrain for seasoned riders as well as scenic cross-country trails suited to all levels of ability. Hotels in North Conway also make excellent bases for touring the state’s various theme parks. Travellers can take a leap of faith at a rope and zip-line adventure park on Chocorua Mountain, or ride the Roar-O-Saurus after tea with Cinderella at Story Land, a historic amusement park popular for its “real life” characters. Nearby Santa’s Village opens its Ho Ho H2O Water Park for the summer, and the biggest indoor water park in New Hampshire is also close by.

Living in a material world…

North Conway is also a mecca for shoppers, as it is home to over 200 factory outlet stores. Coupons and sales on the already discounted merchandise draw bargain hunters here in droves. Downtown North Conway also offers many art galleries, upscale shops, souvenir stores, and at least two kitschy, yet cool places no discerning shopper should miss: The North Conway 5 & 10 and Zeb’s General Store. The “Five and Dime” is the town’s oldest continually operating retail store, and though few of its eclectic wares still sell for five or ten cents, they are still reasonably priced by today’s standards, and the store itself is a heritage property. Zeb’s General Store offers a similarly wide range of nostalgic, useful, and hard-to-find items, but even more of them: shoppers can easily spend hours browsing the many delights housed in its 6,600 square feet.
