Old Nickel is a budget, family-owned hotel in Amsterdam’s old town centre, about three minutes’ walk from the Red Light District and Amsterdam Centraal Station. The hotel is just around the corner from the Basilica of St. Nicholas, and within a ten minutes of attractions like Dam Square, the Royal Palace, canal boat trips and shopping on Kalverstraat. The hotels simple rooms come with wash basins and share bathrooms found in the hallway, while some rooms can be located in an annex. Luggage storage is available on site, as well as free Wi-Fi and tourist information from reception. Continental buffet breakfasts are served every morning at the bar, which features wooden panelling from a 17th Century Dutch navy ship and a wide range of beers. Old Nickel is within 20 minutes of Leidseplein Square, Museumplein attractions like the Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House via nearby trams.
Old Nickel was found to be just a hop and skip away from the central station, old city attractions like Dam Square, Chinatown, canal cruises and the Red Light District were a matter of minutes away, and guests also appreciated the bars and cafes around the corner.
As a few guests said, it is not the Ritz, but it is cheap for the location with generally clean rooms, and basic shared bathrooms — a decent spot to crash for a little bit between exploration excursions.
Those who stayed normally found the staff at the dual purpose reception and bar to be very nice and accommodating, but occasionally experienced grumpy service. The bar was found to have a huge selection, adequate breakfast and it was possible to store luggage.
Guests found there to be a lot of noise at night while staying at Old Nickel, and especially from the karaoke bar just outside, which seems to be open until all hours. Earplugs or joining the party yourself are recommended.
Part and parcel of such a traditional Dutch building is the lack of elevator and of existence of narrow and steep stairs, which require a fair effort if you are on the top floor and are hard to lug large luggage up.
The rooms here, are, to repeat, not luxurious, and some guests found them to be smelling of smoke, on the dated side, a bit dirty and dusty, small and the TVs were occasionally out of order. Having said that, many people were happy to ignore this for the price and the fact they wouldn't be spending much time in them.
