Chamberlain is in the Central Business District of Sydney. It is three-star rated and provides budget accommodation to travellers and visiting tourists. Dormitory accommodation is available in addition to private rooms which include TV and refrigerator. All accommodation features free Wi-Fi. Bathroom facilities are shared, with hot shower availability at all times. Guests are provided with keycard room access, fresh bed linen and bath towel. Laundry and drying facilities are available at Chamberlain and there is a communal TV Lounge. The shared kitchen is equipped for the preparation of light snacks and full meals. The rooms are OK. Quite clean and spacious. So are the facilities - it's just people who are messy and who have no intention of leaving the showers/toilets in a fit state for the next person. Most important, though, the beds are really comfortable.
Members of staff, for the main part, are very good, helpful and keen that you should enjoy your stay. They generate a very friendly atmosphere.
It's a great location with lots of things happening in the immediate area. The iconic Opera House is a short drive away. There are plenty of eateries … and ‘drinkeries'! It's no problem to stroll to, say, Paddy's Market, Chinatown and Darling Harbour.
The kitchen is a big ‘no, no'. It's a major disappointment with very limited facilities. You'll tolerate it if staying for a couple of days - but no longer. It seems that this Heritage building was formerly a hotel, providing accommodation for professional actors performing at the Capitol Theatre. Is that how nearby Darling Harbour got its name? Maybe not!
There are quite a few floors here but no lift. Getting to your accommodation, after an arduous journey, can be … a hill too far. A ‘dumb waiter' sort of lift would at least accommodate the luggage.
They lock the main door at 11pm so you'll need your keycard to gain access. OK in theory but when it doesn't work, you'll be waiting, seemingly endlessly, for someone to come and let you in. Don't rely on the Wi-Fi either. It's free … but not freely accessible.
