Kielder Forest is the largest forest in England and covers an area of over 400 square kilometres. The area includes Kielder Water, one of the largest man made areas of water in England and also includes a vast area of blanket bog. This unique habitat provides a haven for wildlife and it is of national importance for its breeding numbers of Black Grouse and Red Squirrels, which are otherwise almost extinct in England. The whole area is owned and managed by the Forestry Commission but there are public rights of way throughout much of the area. There is a visitor centre at Kielder Castle that is open daily from Easter until late October from 10am until 5pm. Visiting is free and a wide range of different facilities are available
