Weissensee (Weissensee, Austria)

“White Lake” is the translation of “Weissensee”, a lake which has obtained its characteristic colour from the chalk which leeches from the limestone mountains. There is a variety of fish and bird-life and, although water temperatures of approximately 24 degrees Celsius are experienced in summer, the lake freezes and is used for skating in winter. Much of the lake forms part of a protected area and boating other than by specially licensed vessels is disallowed. Regional activities include hiking, mountain biking, swimming, fishing and watersports in summer and in winter there is skating and cross-country skiing.
