The Palace of 40 Pillars (Isfahan, Iran)

The 40-Column Palace has, ironically, just 20 columns on the veranda. The name is believed to come from the building being reflected in the long pool in front of it - thus doubling the number of columns. When it was built in the 17th Century, the palace was used by Shah Abbas for entertaining and receiving visitors - indeed, when the Queen and Prince Philip visited Isfahan in the time of the Shah, they were accommodated in this building (with Philip getting the room with the ‘erotic’ frescoes). The veranda has been designed with pillars made from single tree trunks. It’s believed that these were originally covered in mirrors to give the impression that the roof was floating on air. Inside the building is a collection of rugs, ceramics and other valuable handicrafts, but the most spectacular items are the large frescoes on the walls. These record major historic events such as battles and a visit from the Indian emperor Humuyan. There is a room with a particularly fine fresco of a lady dancing in a transparent blouse whose foot is being kissed by a man. This was considered a very ‘racy’ painting at the time. Only the attention and protection of the caretakers of the museum managed to prevent it being destroyed after the Islamic revolution. The palace is set in very pleasant flower gardens with a long reflecting pond leading up to the building. Entrance fee is 5000 Rials.
