San Pedro de Atacama Celestial Explorations (San Pedro de Atacama, Chile)

San Pedro de Atacama Celestial Explorations is the largest public observatory in Chile. It was established in 2003 by a husband and wife team who were attracted by the clear skies above the Atacama desert, perfect conditions for celestial observations. The observatory is an amenity for both the professional and the amateur. Professionally, they have a particular interest in near Earth objects, and host telescopes for institutions world-wide. Telescopes are also available for rental. For the casual visitor and amateur, however, they offer a Star Tour, a two and a half hour guide of the night sky both with the naked eye and with telescopes. These take place nightly, unless the sky is obscured or around the full moon, and the package includes transport to and from San Pedro de Atacama and refreshments. For families with young children, minitours earlier in the evening are provided. Booking is necessary, and groups can be accommodated.
