    The Buddhist ruins at Paharpar, Naogaon in Bangladesh were recognised by UNESCO in 1985 when the site was added to the list of World Heritage sites as a site of cultural importance. The site, which is also known as Somapura Mahavihara, was built in the 8th Century by the Pala king Dharmapala and was a large Buddhist monastery with a stupa in the middle and 177 cells for the monks. The monastery was a major centre of Buddhist learning until its destruction by fire in the 12th century. Inscription on the World Heritage list has helped to protect the site from the threat of local mining developments.
