Pushkar lake (Pushkar, India)

Pushkar Lake is a holy spot in the Rajasthani town of Pushkar, a quiet town that is probably best known for its annual ‘Camel Fair’ which occurs in November. Legend tells that Brahma dropped some lotus petals and one of these petals created the lake and Pushkar is home to the world’s only Brahma temple. The lake attracts Hindu pilgrims who come to wash in its waters from the 52 bathing ‘ghats’ around its perimeter. Worshippers believe that the water at each of the ghats (a ghat is a flight of stone steps beside the water) has different powers. For example bathing from on ghat helps solve problems with fertility whilst others cure leprosy, make you more beautiful or give you great wisdom. During the festival the town is extremely crowded and busy but at all other times of year, Pushkar lake and Pushkar town are peaceful places to visit.
