Port of Durban (Durban, South Africa)

Although the first recorded landings at Durban Bay date from 1824, ti was only at about 1840 that the first harbourmaster was appointed. Since then Durban Harbour has developed into the busiest port on the African continent and also one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. The distance around the Port from one side to the other is 21km and 57 berths are provided in addition to those for repairs and fishing vessels. It is operated by the National Ports Authority (NPA). Approximately a third of all ships calling at South African ports are routed via Durban Port and facilities include numerous cargo terminals as well as a passenger terminal. Cruises from Cape Town to Durban and beyond are mostly operational from November to May. There are also three yachting marinas and recreational options include fishing and para-sailing.
