Nasir-al Mulk Mosque (Shiraz, Iran)

The mosque is named after a man who was governor of Shiraz in the 19th Century. It was never a public mosque; instead it was reserved for the rich people of the city as a semi-private place of worship. These days the building is owned by a charity for poor people - hence the higher than normal (for the area) entrance fee of 22500 Rials (approx 2 Euros), which goes towards supporting the charity. There are many notable features of this mosque, such as the European-style tiling with lots of pinks in the colour scheme, the Spanish Pool which is reminiscent of Andalucia, the wooden timbers that are locked together like bricks to help the building withstand earthquakes and the indoor ‘winter’ section with a turquoise blue floor, carved pillars and stained glass. The mosque is also unusual in having no minarets - as it was not used by the public, there was no need to call them to prayer. It is open from 8am to 1 pm and from 3.30pm to 6.30 pm (closing at 8 pm in the summer).
