Museo de Arte Precolombino (Santiago, Chile)

The Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art/Museo Chileno De Arte Precolombino was founded by architect Sergio Larraín García-Moreno to provide an institution devoted to the conservation, study, and transmission of the artistic legacy of the pre-Columbian peoples the Western Hemisphere. The museum opened to the public in 1981, with Larraín’s personal holdings of pre-Columbian art serving as the core of its permanent collection. The collection contains artifacts representing the cultural diversity of six principal geographic areas, each with its own exhibit hall: Mesoamerica, Intermediate (Central America), the Caribbean, Central Andes, and the Southern Andes. The museum maintains a library with resources devoted to the pre-Columbian art, archaeology, architecture, and anthropology of the Americas—as well as archives to preserve ethnographic videos and indigenous music. It also serves as a center for the conservation, registration, and restoration of pre-Columbian artifacts. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday and offers guided tours at regular intervals. Visitors wishing to participate in these tours are advised to register in advance on the day of the tour.
