Mousa Broch (Mousa, United Kingdom)

Brochs are dry-stone structures specific to Scotland and were particularly numerous in Shetland with over a hundred sites which may have been brochs. Mousa Broch is a very well-preserved example thought to be around 2000 years old, the only one whose structure survives right to the top (over 13 metres high). An internal staircase leads to a walkway at the top. The structure is a double-wall within which there are three small rooms and only one opening on the external face, the entrance. There are early historical mentions of Mousa Broch, in particular in a 1153 Icelandic saga when two lovers took refuge there when their union was not universally approved. The broch is now home to many of the island’s 6000 storm petrels who nest here.
