Machu Picchu (Machu Picchu Pueblo, Peru)

Located at 2,430 metres above sea level on a mountain above the Urubamba Valley it is one of the Inca Empire symbols. It was built around 1460 AD but was abandoned a hundred years later at the time of the Spanish conquest. It was brought to worldwide attention in 1911 by the American historian Hiram Bingham. The most important buildings are the Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows built in the classical Inca style. Machu Picchu was declared a Peruvian Historical Sanctuary in 1981 and an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
