Kyoto Tower (Kyoto, Japan)

Kyoto Tower is 131m high and is the tallest structure in the city. Its design symbolises a lighthouse in the landlocked city. The observation deck is located at a height of 100m and is open to the public. The tower was built in the 1960s and was planned to mark the city’s role as host city of the 1964 summer Olympic Games although the tower did not actually open until the end of 1964. The tower was designed by engineer Makoto Tanahashi who created a building capable of withstanding earthquakes and typhoons. The tower remains a controversial building and is considered by many observers to be out of keeping with its historic surroundings. Opening hours are 9:00 to 21:00 with last entry 20 minutes before closing time. The tower is open 7 days per week. Adult entrance fee is approximately €6.
