Hram-Pametnik Sveti Alexandаr Newski (Sofia, Bulgaria)

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is located right in the center Sofia. It is one of the capital’s most famous landmarks and one of the symbols of the city. The Neo-Byzantine cathedral is the home of the Patriarch of Bulgaria and, covering an area of 3,170 square metres, one of the largest Eastern European Orthodox cathedrals in the world. The foundation stone for the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was laid in 1882 and the building works were completed in 1912, in honour to the Russian soldiers who died during the Russo-Turkish Liberation War (1877-1878). The interior of the cathedral features materials such as Italian marble, Brazilian onyx and African alabaster and the decor includes frescoes and woodcarvings made by artists from Bulgaria and Russia. In an underground crypt you can find an Icon Museum with a large collection of icons. The exposition opened in 1964 and features icons from across Bulgaria that are among the 9th to 18th century masterpieces in the Balkans. The around 300 exhibits follow the development of the Bulgarian icon-painting, starting from the 9th through to the 19th century.
