Hagenbeck Zoo (Hamburg, Germany)

The Hagenbeck Zoo is located in Stellingen in Hamburg. The park began collecting animals in 1863 under the guidance of Carl Hagenbeck senior and the zoo was founded by Carl Hagenbeck junior in 1907. It was the first zoo surrounded by moats and with open-air enclosures that resembled the natural habitats of the animals. Hagenbeck junior collected animals from around the world. He also collected skeletons of human beings and displayed these in the human zoo. He continued exhibiting humans and in 1876 he exhibited Nubians in Europe. In the 1890’s Hagenbeck began exhibiting seals and walruses in a pool. He created the first panorama exhibition by using a hidden moat behind the pool and beyond another hidden moat there were reindeers. Then beyond the third hidden moat there were polar bears. These animals all appeared to be merged together in one land. During the Second World War, the original zoo was destroyed but it was rebuilt after the war. The zoo is still privately run by the Hagenbeck family.
