Fort Donelson National Battlefield (Dover, USA)

The Fort Donelson National Battlefield near Dover preserves the remains of three Civil War-era forts (Forts Donelson, Henry, and Heiman) near the Northwest Tennessee town of Dover. In 1862, the defeat of Confederate troops at the Battle of Fort Donelson was part of a campaign that opened the Tennessee and Cumberland rivers to the Union Navy and brought Union General Ulysses S. Grant to national prominence. The park consists of about 2000 acres and protects the remains of the three forts, the Confederate defensive batteries overlooking the Cumberland River, and a national cemetery. Facilities include a Visitor Center–which includes Civil War artefacts and an exhibit on the Underground Railroad–and a network of trails connecting the site’s key points of interest. The battlefield is open year-round, and admission is free.
