Crkva svetog Djordja (Topola, Serbia)

Crkva svetog Ðorda or the St George Church at Oplenac was built by the Serbian king Peter I. Its construction started in 1910 and took 2 years to complete. During World War I the church was severely damaged by Austria-Hungarian soldiers that looted copper from the roof and transferred it to Austria where it was melted down and used in ammunition production. The interior of the church is decorated with mosaics that represent museum reproductions of frescoes of Serbian medieval art. Copies from 60 Serbian medieval churches and monasteries have been brought to the St. George church at Oplenac. The entire mosaic has 725 painted compositions consisting of 1500 figures. The entire surface of the mosaic is 3,500 square meters with 40 million pieces of glass in 15 thousand different colours.
