The Channel Islands National Park near Ventura, California, combines 5 of the 8 channel islands, Santa Rosa, Anacapa, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz and San Miguel. Although the islands are not far from the mainland they have been isolated and mainly unpopulated, thus being able to preserve their natural and cultural resources, rich in flora and fauna some of which is unique on the planet. Even though none of the islands are big they combine 2500 miles of coastline and are home to more than 2000 species of plants and animals, with 145 species that are unique on the planet and only exist here. The park, which is one of the least visited in the United States, has become a US National Monument already in 1938, was designated a National Biosphere Reserve in 1976 and is a National Park since 1980. To get there isn’t as easy as with other US National Parks as there is no direct road access, which is reflected in the low number of visitors per annum. To get to the park visitors need to arrange a flight or boat trip via the mainland visitor centre or arrive in their private boat. Santa Cruz Island is not only home to the park’s offshore visitor centre but also offers a camping site.
