Champaner Pavagadh Archaeological Park is located at the foot of the Pavagadh Hill at a distance of approximately 50 km from Baroda (also known as Vadodara). The park contains a collection of mostly unexcavated historic remains spread across an area of 6 square kilometers. Highlights include prehistoric remains, a fortress dating back to an early Hindu city and the ruins of the 16th century capital of Gujarat. There are religious buildings, palaces, domestic dwellings and agricultural artefacts spanning the period from the 8th to the 14th century. A temple to Kalikamata stands on top of Pavagadh Hill and is an important site of pilgrimage. In total more than 100 monuments are to be found within the park. The park is open from sunrise to sunset throughout the year with a small entrance fee. The importance of the park was recognised by UNESCO who added it to their list of World Heritage Sites in 2004.
