Borobudur Temple (Yogyakarta, Indonesia)

Borobudur is a Buddhist temple, built in 8th and 9th century. Borobudur temple lays ona a small hill, overlooking volcanoes Merapi and Merbabu on the East and Sumbing and Sindoro on the North, near the junction of two rivers Elo and Progo, believed to be symbolic of the Gangga and Yamuna, the two rivers feeding the Indus valley in India. Borobudur’s architecture is modeled after Buddhist cosmology, where the Universe is divided into three worlds, and each part of the monument is devoted to a different world: the Kamadhatu or the phenomenal world, the world of desires; the Rupadhatu, a transitional sphere where humans are released from their corporeal form and worldly concerns; and the Arupadhatu, the sphere of Gods the sphere of perfection and enlightenment. The pyramidal base has five concentric square terraces with the walls and balustrades decorated with fine low reliefs, covering a total surface area of 2,500 m2. The trunk of a cone is consisted of three circular platforms with 72 openwork smaller stupas, each containing a statue of the Buddha. The top has one monumental stupa. The monument was restored with UNESCO’s help in the 1970s and it is listed in UNESCO World Heritage.
