Big Cypress National Preserve has headquarters in Everglades City and two Visitor Centres along the Tamiami Trail (U.S. Highway 41). Located between Miami and Naples, the Preserve is also accessible from the I-78 and stretches from the Everglades National Park to north of the I-75. The Big Cypress Swamp is the natural habitat for varied wildlife which includes alligator, bears and the rare Florida panther. Established in 1974, the Big Cypress National Preserve was one of the first conservation areas in the NPS portfolio. Varied recreational options such as canoeing, hiking, hunting and guided walking tours are available and facilities include several campgrounds. There are also two scenic drives and some off-road vehicle trails.
