Amazon Theatre (Manaus, Brazil)

The Amazon Theatre or Manaus Opera House , which was opened in 1896 at the peak of the rubber boom in Manaus, is a Neoclassical French style building designed by the architect Celestial Sacardim. It displays the wealth of the rubber boom and features Italian frescoes, crystal chandeliers, Louis XV furnishings and Carrarra marble. Ceiling paintings by Domenico de Angelis can be viewed and there is also a small museum in the Opera house. The Opera House re-opened in 1990 after having been closed to the public for some decades and now hosts the annual Festival Amazonas de Ópera from mid-April to the end of May. Besides hosting regular theatrical, dance and musical performances, the Teatro Amazonas is also open daily from 09h00 to 21h00 for public tours, except on Sundays when the hours are from 16h00 to 21h00.
