Φορτέτσα - Fortezza (Rethymnon, Greece)

The Venetian Fortezza dates from 1590 when it was constructed as a defence against the Turks and also housed one of the Councillors, the Rector and guards. Storage rooms for the artillery were also available and there was a church dedicated to Aghios Nikolaos which was later replaced by the current Mosque of Sultan Ibrahim. The Fortezza is located on Paleokastro hill, which was the site of a Roman Temple circa. 3AD and was designed by the architect Michele Sanmicheli. The fortress is floodlit at night and is open to visitors daily between 09h00 and sunset.
