Hotel Na Balam is a three-star rated, beachfront hotel. It is a short walk from the Ultramar Ferry Terminal. Beach front casita, room and suite accommodation ... is air conditioned and typically includes a safe, flat-screen TV, sofa, blackout drapes and organic toiletries. Much of the accommodation features a balcony or terrace and many units have pool views. Sea views, plunge pool and hot tub, are among the upgrade inclusions. Free parking is available at Hotel Na Balam. Further features include an outdoor pool, hot tub and yoga studio. All this is in a Caribbean beach setting, surrounded by palm trees. A complimentary breakfast is served. Later, Zazil Ha serves Mayan and vegetarian dishes. The beachfront Palapa Bar serves drinks and snacks. Places of interest and activities include snorkeling, the water sports of Garrafon Natural Park, scuba diving and bird watching.
They say that it is close to one of the most beautiful beaches on the island … and it is! The welcome from the front desk seems genuine and warm. They give an excellent first impression. Sadly this isn't followed through in all other departments.
The Beach Club Restaurant serves excellent food and drinks. Prices are imaginative, though.
The air con works quite well … thankfully! … and beds are comfortable with good standard bed linen. Rooms are clean (*ish) and the Sky TV channels are a welcome surprise.
Poolside rooms are older and prone to problems. Beach front rooms are more expensive but they are noticeably better. The supply of constant hot water is a problem - even in Paradise! Don't get too excited about the free breakfast; it's only a very ordinary continental style offering.
Staff ‘tips' are not included in the advertised prices. There's no fear of you forgetting this fact. Staff will remind you … to the points of tedium and annoyance. Generally, management is OK. The rest of the staff are like the ‘curate's boiled egg' … good in parts.
‘Bog standard' breakfast gets the day off to a mediocre start. It starts at 7.30 and you can't get anything at all before that time. Any practical problems result in the hotel supplying materials, basically for you to rectify the situation. Lots of things lacking here, but the optimistic assessment of their own value, as expressed via the tariffs ...can't be faulted. Overpriced.
