Monterey Surf Inn is a great choice for it puts you near a lot of coastal activities and sites, but also set back enough to not be around too much noise. You can easily walk or bike to many sites of interest, and picking up public transit is just as convenient. Using this as a base works well for its central location, and saves you money.

This is a fairly typical seaside motel, so you pretty much get what's expected for the price. That's not a bad thing though, because the rooms have comfy beds, nice décor, and ample space to store belongings. The location is also considered a safe place to be, especially for solo travelers.

Staff are pleasant, parking is ample and no-hassle, and the Wi-Fi signal is one of the stronger ones you may encounter at hotels. The little things encountered here add up nicely, and help make this a satisfying stay.

A couple of rooms don't have windows, so be aware of where your reservation is assigned. Check the accommodations before committing to the placement.

Many of the bathrooms have strange odors, which in some way are related to cleaning, or lack thereof. Either they smell too strongly of disinfectant, or have a musty, well scent that may come from poor upkeep.

It's disappointing that no onsite breakfast is provided, and that hot beverages are only available for a short time in the morning. These are amenities that are commonly provided at budget lodging, so the pricing isn't a viable excuse.
