Many guests are charmed by the heritage-listed building's exterior, the open log fire in the cosy lounge, aquariums in the hallways, and the beautifully landscaped courtyard. The interior is also widely described as clean and comfortable, with a nice mix of modern and more "vintage" decor. The superior and loft-style rooms are particularly spacious, and the balconies are a much appreciated feature. Guests also enjoy the atmosphere (and food!) in the courtyard restaurant,bistro, and bar.

The reception staff have earned many glowing reviews for their friendly and professional service, with guests often delighted by "extra" gestures of hospitality to mark special occasions and prompt, thorough resolution of any reported issues.

Travellers generally like the hotel's location, noting that the War Memorial and the Canberra Centre are about ten minutes away on foot. There's also a Red Bus stop right outside the hotel for guests interested in a hop on hop off tour, and many of the city's best attractions (Questacon, The National Gallery, and The Parliament House) are within a short drive.

The ample car parking lot on site was, until very recently, free of charge. Returning guests are generally unhappy about the new fee.

There is no elevator on the older property, and some guests struggle with suitcases on the stairs to upper floors and in the loft-style rooms. The walk may be worthwhile, however, as some of the standard level rooms have been described as uncomfortably small, dark, or noisy.

Guests unmoved by the hotel's "old world charm" generally describe the hotel as old and tired, often commenting that further renovations (and a higher level of housekeeping) would be a significant improvement.
