The pool is great … utterly fantastic. The smaller one for kids is also spot on.

Reception members of staff are nice and helpful. So too are the cleaners who work round you very quietly. These people are as nice to you - as you are to them.

Someone once said that Gran Canaria has one of the world's best year round climates. Even during the European winter months, the sun is shining down on this island. *It's a bit cloudier and subject to rain once you get north of the airport and in to the capital, Las Palmas. Here, though, the sun seems to have a constant presence.

If you are here for a fun-type holiday, you are best advised to try elsewhere. You need a car, or taxi transport, to reach civilisation + food and drink prices are high, because they know that you can't wander out to try a neighbouring establishment. If you're after peace, quiet and golf, it's fine. Otherwise, you'll be disappointed, tired and out of pocket.

Breakfast is an extremely simple presentation, but vastly overpriced. Unless, though, you jump in the car, it's either that or DIY. Generally, catering is a real negative here. Overpriced, unimaginative and served in areas that any recent renovation programme has by-passed entirely. Not nice.

Here you are, in the middle of nowhere and you really need to grit your teeth to undertake the long … long walk to the  from trekking to the beach ... and back.
