Situated in the heart of downtown Taos’ historic district, Hotel La Fonda de Taos continues a long history of offering weary travelers warm hospitality and comfortable accommodation. Decorated in calming earth tomes, the rooms offer guests a cozy hideaway. Each features ceiling fan, flat screen TV, coffee maker, hairdryer, clock radio and telephone. Reception staff are available to assist with local information and other matters, while there is on-site parking available for a fee. The Karavas Conference Center can accommodate up to 700 guests. There is no in-house restaurant, but staff have prepared a foodie itinerary and will be happy to recommend the very best local restaurants for your needs. D.H. Lawrence’s “Forbidden Art” collection is housed in the building and guests have free access to it during their stay. Taos’ historic center also has a number of art galleries and is a charming place just to stroll and take in the atmosphere.
La Fonda de Taos is situated right in the very heart of the town's historical district. Guests loved the atmosphere created by the historic buildings, art galleries and other amenities in the surrounding streets, but also found that it made for a decent base when visiting the surrounding ski slopes.
It seems that most of the rooms have built in gas fireplaces that guests traveling in the cooler months really appreciated. They seemed to not only generate physical warmth, but also created a romantic and cozy atmosphere as well.
There has been an inn on the site since 1820. The current buildings are themselves quite old and very much pay tribute to times past. Guests seemed to really like the old-time atmosphere, and had the sense that they were stepping back into the frontier period.
This was far and away what most disappointed guests when it came to La Fonda. There is neither a restaurant nor bar on-site, only a basic facility providing hot drinks. Guests really missed being able to have breakfast at their hotel, as well as a nightcap or odd drink with friends at their hotel bar.
This seemed to upset a number of guests, who objected to having to pay extra to park when they already considered their room-rate to be too high. They felt they were being nickel and dimed.
While not an entirely serious complaint, more than one guest mentioned that the hotel had a long-held reputation for being haunted, resulting in some ‘interesting' nights involving a creaking here or faint whistle there. Or was it something else?
