The hotel is located at the Oakland Waterfront Estuary, about 1.5 miles outside downtown. Guests often mention that that the ferry terminal and BART station are nearby for those who wish to skip the drive; the weekday shuttle goes to both of these locations and a few more. Jack London Square is just a few minutes away.

The front desk, housekeeping, and breakfast staff frequently receive rave reviews for their personable and professional customer service. Guests often report a warm welcome from every team member they meet. Several guests who stayed for an extended period remarked that the staff learned their names, a touch which helped them to feel "at home." The breakfast and evening social are also generally well received.

Guests often describe the rooms as spacious and sparkling clean, with comfortable beds and well equipped kitchens. Families and groups love the extra privacy and space of the one-bedroom and two-bedroom suites. Some of the rooms on upper floors offer lovely views of the harbor and yachts.

Guests often note that the building is older and the general impression seems to be that the rooms look "tired", with time-worn, dated furnishings, fabrics, and carpet. However, an interior renovation is currently underway.

Some of the rooms overlook a busy freeway instead of the marina, and light sleepers have been disturbed by the traffic noise. Other have been disturbed by noisy neighbors in the hallways.

Though the hotel has a smoke-free policy, a few guests found that their fellow guests had decided not to follow it, and were disturbed by the odor. A few others had housekeeping issues to report.
