Golden Gate Bridge (San Francisco, USA)

The Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937 to span the mouth of San Francisco Bay, it was for many years both the world’s longest and tallest suspension bridge. Distinguished by its orange vermilion colour, it has become an iconic symbol for the City of San Francisco. Design and construction of the bridge involved a team of architects and engineers led by Joseph Strauss under the auspices of the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District authority. The structure is 8,981 feet long, 90 feet wide, and 746 feet high. The main span between the two suspension towers is 4,200 feet long. The bridge surface consists of six traffic lanes servicing US Route 101 and California State Route 1, plus pedestrian and bicycle lanes. At mean high water mark, it has a vertical clearance of 220 feet, which is sufficient to accommodate bay-area traffic.
