Hotel Fontana may appear simple, however, the accommodation, set in an 18th century building in the heart of Amalfi – directly in front of the Saint Amalfi fountain, positively oozes authenticity. The 21 en-suite bedrooms and suites are bright with high ceilings – some offering breathtaking views of the Amalfi Coast from their balconies. All are air-conditioned with satellite TV and mini bars. Hotel Fontana operates a 24-hour front desk with Wi-Fi available in communal areas for a small fee. Parking is available nearby for subsidised rates whilst a free shuttle bus can bring guests to Le Nereidi swimming pool, with a panoramic terrace overlooking the coast. There are several eateries within a few minutes’ walk of the hotel, including the deceptively fine Ristorante Piazza Duoma, just a minute’s walk away. Guests can wander down to the Amalfi ferry terminal in around four minutes, and the harbour in ten. The breathtaking clifftop village of Postiano is 16 kilometres further along the coast.
The Fontana is not only right on the main square, but also just steps from the harbour, where ferries to Capri and Positano can be caught. Guests simply loved being in such a convenient spot. Even public busses along the coast could be caught nearby.
While they certainly didn't consider their room-rate cheap, a great many guests considered the fact that they were in a great position on a very expensive stretch of coast and concluded that they had received very good value for money.
The staff at Fontana are almost universally praised. They are described as very friendly and easy going, immediately putting guests in a bit of a holiday frame of mind. Also, several guest mention receiving especially useful local intel from the reception staff.
This is perhaps the main criticism guests aim at Fontana. They describe the décor as very dated, and believe that the hotel could be much better with even just a small update. There were no real complaints about functionality, it was a purely aesthetic issue.
The hotel faces Amalfi's main square. While many guests loved being able to sit in their rooms and watch the streetlife below, others felt that it was a bit noisy at night, and some had their sleep disturbed by the odd reveller outside.
Interestingly, several guest mentioned this independently. The hotel has a staircase that needs to be negotiated before the elevator is reached. Many were shocked that the hotel offered them no assistance at all with their bags, and felt that, given its star rating, this should have been forthcoming.
